British Columbia's Kootenay Development Region has been divided several different ways over the years. Well known are the East Kootenay and West Kootenay, but in the 1960s the Region was politically mapped and 3 new Regional Districts were incorporated. As a result there were also changes to neighbouring Regional Districts. For instance, Golden BC and Revelstoke BC areas are part of the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District. The Central Kootenay and Kootenay-Boundary Regional Districts have been formed roughly where the West Kootenay was known to be. These types of political changes occur when population densities shift, or the Province intends to foster industry and job growth or balance other factors within the Province. The goal is to balance prosperity and create opportunity for citizens in all areas of BC Canada.
The East Kootenay is a Regional District in BC Canada with the population centre of Cranbrook BC and neighbouring Kimberley BC. The area is reknowned for alpine skiing. Realestate and recreation development has been booming for most of the new millenium.
The Central Kootenay Regional District contains the population centres of Castlegar BC, Creston BC, and Nelson BC.
The Kootenay-Boundary Regional District contains the population centre of Trail BC.
